THE SEA

Urdaibai is the sea, marsh, beaches, and estuary. It’s a truly beautiful setting and an ideal space for doing water activities and sports.

Mundaka is one of the 10 best spots in the world for surfing lovers. The famous left wave of this small seafaring village in Urdaibai is world-famous for having a good tube and being 400 metres long. The Mundaka sandbar, that was one of the hot-spots in the world surfing circuit for years, is only suitable for experienced surfers.

And for people who aren’t experts, there are surf schools, which is an excellent choice to get started or improve your skills in the sport.

San Juan de Gaztelugatxe Bermeo

From the summit you can enjoy an exceptional panoramic view of the protected biotope that makes up one of the most beautiful natural landscapes on our coast.

Wild beaches, stunning cliffs, rock formations like Akatz, islets and the flysch with its capricious forms make up the magical scenery of the Gaztelugatxe area.

San Miguel de Ereñozar Ereño

Surrounded by an oak forest, on the 447 m summit of mount Ereñozar, that at one time had a castle and medieval necropolis, you can find a discrete hermitage.

The effort of climbing to this natural lookout is compensated by one of the best panoramic views of the estuary from Gernika to where it joins the sea.

On clear days your gaze can reach the Durangaldea mountains and, if you wait for nightfall, the sunset is guaranteed to be spectacular.

San Pedro de Atxarre Ibarrangelu

We recommend going up from the Akorda neighbourhood or from Kanala on an easy trail that’s perfect for doing as a family.

At a little more than 300 m you’ll find one of the scenic lookouts in the Basque Country that is most popular because the panoramic view of the Urdaibai Biosphere Reserve is one of the best and most complete.

From there you can see the towns of Mundaka, Bermeo, Sukarrieta and Busturia, glimpse the Matxitxako cape, the marsh and the changing scenery of the estuary to where it joins the sea, the Ogoño cape, Izaro island... In short, an excellent 360º panorama and a joy for the sight.

Santa Katalina Mundaka

With a short and enjoyable walk from Mundaka you can reach the Santa Katalina area, which has been converted into a nice recreation area.

The slender hermitage gives this place a unique beauty that, in addition to making it very photogenic, is an excellent lookout that points directly at Izaro island and lets you see the mouth of the estuary with the stunning Ogoño rock formation in the background.

Balcony of Biscay Mendata

South of the Urdaibai Biosphere Reserve, on the slopes of mount Oiz near Mendeta, this scenic lookout honours its name, because it offers breathtaking views of the mountainous landscape of the Urdaibai basin.

San Miguel de Altamira Morga

If you want to see an authentic Basque rural landscape, this is the place.

Like any good self-respecting scenic outlook, it’s nested in a beautiful natural space and has its corresponding hermitage.

On clear days, you can see the deep, green Ganbe valley dotted with baserris from there. Your gaze can also reach the coast to the Uribe comarque where you can make out Sollube, one of the montes bocineros (horn mountains) from which the General Assembly was called.

Bizkaigane Errigoiti

Near the Metxikas de Errigoiti neighbourhood, crowned by the Santakrutze hermitage, this small summit has breathtaking panoramic views of Biscay.

The summit of Bizkaigane is a very easy trip to do as a family, and a real surprise because the views from there are very nice. In addition to views of the area’s natural glory, because of its breadth you can see distant peaks in Gipuzkoa and even Burgos.

Matxitxako Bermeo

Matxitxako is the cape on the Cantabrian coast that reaches furthest into the sea, and it’s an excellent lookout over our coast. To the west are Gaztelugatxe and Akatx island, to the east Izaro and Ogoño, and to the north the Cantabrian Sea and the horizon.

Stopping in this little getaway is well worth it, not only for its beautiful views of the coast, but because you can also visit its two lighthouses - the current one and the old one - the latter of which houses the Matxitxako cape marine bird and whale watching observatory.

Txatxarramendi Sukarrieta

Cross the bridge and enter one of the longest surviving oak groves in Urdaibai. Inside, you’ll find a botanical park where you can see 25 species of plants, most of them common to Cantabrian oak groves, oak, bay, and strawberry trees...

The surroundings are also an interesting space for watching the aquatic birds that live in the marsh, including kingfishers, little egrets, grey herons and great cormorants, among others.

You can also get to Txatxarramendi from the San Antonio beach at low tide.

Izaro Bermeo

It’s the largest and most protected island, being as the most important marine bird colony of our coast nests in the high part. There is no free entry, so we recommend enjoying its landscape on the horizon from one of the scenic lookouts, especially Santa Katalina in Mundaka.

We also recommend visiting on 22 July to enjoy the incredible atmosphere on Magdalena day when authorities from Bermeo go to the island in a colourful boat procession to acknowledge and reclaim the limits of their town.

Akatz Bermeo

A promontory between the Matxitxako cape and San Juan de Gaztelugatxe, it’s a resting place for a large bird population, known as “storm birds”, who go there for protection when there is a storm. Another curiosity is the wild olive trees that are reminiscent of a much milder climate.

Sandindere Busturia

On the San Antonio beach, Sandinere is the island furthest inland in Biscay and, at low tide, it magically appears surrounded by sand. This green islet has thick vegetation typical of Cantabrian oak groves, a natural emblem of the Urdaibai Biosphere Reserve. It’s also a place of geological interest.

BERMEO
