MADALENA

It’s held on 22 July, and it’s a date that all the residents of Urdaibai put on their calendar. It’s a festival with sailing traditions that the towns of Bermeo, Mundaka and Elantxobe celebrate together, and has its origins in a curious legend.

In a festive and brotherly atmosphere among the towns of Bermeo, Mundaka and Elantxobe, Bermeo confirms their ownership of the island of Izaro. In a traditional sea procession, the mayor of Bermeo throws a tile into the sea while, in a reaffirmation of their possession of the island, they declare, “The ebb of Bermeo reaches here” (honaino heltzen dira Bermeoko itxuginak, in Basque).

It’s a festival that starts very early, where good atmosphere, music, and good humour reign. It’s also customary to wear blue nankeen clothing, which is the typical dress of our fishermen.
