OMA FOREST AND SANTIMAMIÑE CAVE, KORTEZUBI
Enter a magical space where art and nature cohabit in perfect harmony.
The Oma Forest, located in Kortezubi, is one of the most famous works by Basque artist Agustín Ibarrola, and it’s framed by the Art and Nature movement that works directly with the natural environment, where the landscape becomes the painter’s canvas.
The painted forest that you can see today is not the original one. A second forest had to be reproduced very close by, because of the disease affecting the trees in the first forest.
Eyes that watch us, a rainbow, a trapped lightning bolt, forest creatures... There are 34 groups of artworks made up of more than 800 trees in a space where every point of view is different and where your own perception and interpretation take centre stage.
Very nearby, also in Kortezubi, you can find the most important archaeological site in Biscay, the cave of Santimamiñe, declared a world heritage site in 2008.
And even though it’s closed to the public for conservation reasons, you can see the inside of the cave and its famous and very beautiful paintings with a virtual visit at the small interpretation centre.
