San Juan de Gaztelugatxe is quite possibly one of the most magical places and most beautiful and recognised images of the Basque coast and the Basque Country.

241 stairs take you up this enormous crag over the Cantabrian sea crowned by the hermitage for San Juan, a unique setting for battles, legends, and festivals that today is visited by people from around the world.

The best way to get to this magical and marvellous place is by public transport. It’s the most practical, suitable, and sustainable way. In addition, if you come by train the route that goes through Urdaibai (Muxika-Bermeo) is spectacular.
