GERNIKA-LUMO

You should take your time to enjoy this town, because it has a rich and appealing historical, cultural and culinary heritage.

Bombed on 26 April 1937 by German planes and 90% destroyed, this town has become a truly international symbol of peace and liberty. There are still some bomb shelters that can be visited today.

Gernika, and more specifically the tree and Casa de Juntas of Gernika, are the most international symbols of the Basque people. Very close to the Casa de Juntas, you can find the Guernica mural, which is a replica of the famous painting by Pablo Picasso, and there are sculptures by Eduardo Chillida and Henry Moore in the Pueblos de Europa park.

Local food and products can be found in the market on Monday, which is one of the most important in the Basque Country.

The Gernika Jai Alai court is world-famous for being the Mecca of the pointed basket. It’s a Basque sport that had and is once again having a golden age, and it’s considered to be the fastest sport in the world.
