CASA DE JUNTAS AND TREE OF GERNIKA
The tree and the Casa de Juntas of Gernika together are without a doubt the most universal symbol of the Basque people. It’s a symbol of identity that has been declared a Place of Cultural Interest.
There has been a place where all the villages in Biscay could meet together in Gernika for centuries.
Assemblies and debates were held, and problems were solved in the shade of an oak tree. Before taking office as Lord of Biscay respect for Basque freedom (fueros) was also sworn under the tree. Nowadays, the Lehendakari (Basque President) also swears their oath in this place.
